Background: I started riichi in 2023 after moving to NYC. My family played a version at home with chicken hands, very low stakes when I was a kid and I wanted to play more as an adult. I discovered Sparrow’s Nest Studio, where riichi was the primary style. Over time, I began to pursue competitive riichi, first as a sub in tournaments, then in low stakes leagues. Now I play competitively for fun most of the time, as competitions offer a serious approach to mahjong. I endeavor to bring mahjong as a whole to more people in the US, which will hopefully in turn introduce people to the same journey I went through in pursuing higher level competition. I enjoy supporting events and fostering competition in NYC and elsewhere. The ultimate goal for me is to create a riichi community that has levels for everyone to enjoy, without feeling pressure to be the best or disappointment in the level of play
